Controversial Cholesterol Drugs

Be careful where you seek advice

There has been a huge marketing push of pharmaceuticals aimed at the patient in recent years. Sitting at home, watching television or listening to the radio, we all see the happy people, the healthy people, the smiling families telling us how wonderful it was to take some odd sounding pill. Sometimes we can’t even tell what we’re being sold on, all we know is we should ask our doctor about it and the side effects are a little odd. There are so many pharmaceuticals available now, brand names and generic with different names, that when you ask your doctor about one, chances are s/he may only have heard about it if they received samples or marketing brochures from the company. Before going to your doctor to ask about a drug you saw advertised, check out what it is and know what other forms it has. We are all responsible for learning about what we put into our bodies, doctors are busy and can’t know everything about the plethora of drugs available. They’ll know the common ones and the ones that are advertised to them. If you have a serious illness they have guides to look up what to give you or they’ll refer you to a specialist. I’m not recommending saying “no” to your doctor if they think you need treatment, but be aware of what you’re taking and what the other options are. Second opinions can be helpful, reassuring, budget saving, and in some instances, life-saving.
I wrote an article on Drug Awareness for Patients

Here I will outline the facts about drugs that are highly advertised, mostly pharmaceuticals, but I will also provide some information on drugs that are currently illegal, but shouldn’t necessarily be given the faulty information given about them to the general public. If there are any you would like to know about, but don’t see here, email me using the link on the left.

Disclaimer: I do not work for, have never worked for, pharmaceutical companies and have never done research on any particular drug or clinical condition. I receive no money for this information and am not endorsing any particular product or treatment. The research I HAVE conducted has been basic science and genetics, disassociated from the effects of drugs or the actual clinical condition. The information provided here is based on literature research and scrounging.

Here is an article I wrote about the issues surrounding marijuana legislation and research.
